Laurie Weiss, Ph.D., is a leader who is dedicated to fostering collaborative environments that empower students and colleagues alike. With over 30 years in higher education, she currently serves as Dean of the School of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics and the School of Business & Computing at Modesto Junior College (MJC).
Over the past ten years, Dr. Weiss has led the School of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics, driving statewide initiatives in equitable placement and innovative pedagogy in transfer-level mathematics. She was instrumental in reestablishing the Engineering Program at MJC—an achievement that expanded student access, advanced career pathways, and reflects her deep commitment to educational and workforce readiness.
Her leadership focuses on building a regional talent pipeline aligned with emerging technologies, sustainability, and economic growth. As co-chair of the Workforce Development Steering Committee for the Circular Bioeconomy Innovation (CBIO) Collaborative, she advances strategies that grow the circular bioeconomy while delivering tangible community benefits. She also serves on the BioMADE Education and Workforce Development Committee, helping shape the bioindustrial workforce strategy and align project priorities with ecosystem needs.
Before stepping into her current leadership roles, Dr. Weiss spent two decades as a Chemistry Professor, recognized for her pioneering pedagogy and student-centered approach. She launched MJC’s first online course in 1997 and has consistently connected STEM learning to real-world, high-demand careers. Her passion for empowering others continues to define her leadership—mentoring faculty, fostering collaboration, and guiding institutional innovation.
