I am an Assistant Professor of Health Informatics and Health Information Management, and my research is focused on natural language processing (NLP), artificial intelligence (AI), health disparities and health equity, and social determinants of health (SDH) within the electronic health record (EHR). I have a broad background in health research, having served as a Principal Investigator/Staff-Appointed Researcher with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, WV from 2008-2013. In my role, I was able to conduct internal comparative effectiveness research as PI on PT110556, The Effect of Psychiatric Service Animals in Improving Suicide Ideation among Veterans with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder; MIRB01517, Retrospective Analysis of Hypertensive Heart Disease (HHD) Characteristics of Medicare/Medicaid Dual-Eligible Veterans Accessing Healthcare in Washington DC; and MIRB01263, Physician & Physician Assistant Self-Perceived Levels of Cultural Proficiency, where I presented my findings at MVAMC Grand Rounds. I joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2013, where I served as a Behavioral Scientist and lead Evaluator for the Mississippi Department of Health Office of Preventive Health programs, mitigating the effects of chronic disease on residents in the Mississippi Delta. I served as Project Director for the CDC national program REACH, Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health, at Greenwood Leflore Hospital. My work and outreach efforts culminated in a publication in the CDC library. During 2016-2019, I briefly left research and remained in healthcare, garnering skills, and credentials within the health insurance arena. In furtherance of my research on NLP SDH and EHR data, I obtained a processing tool at no cost through my association with the Weill Cornell School of Medicine. I continue to use my gained knowledge, experience, and expertise to tackle the long-range, systemic issues of health inequities and disparities at the intersection of artificial intelligence, generative AI, population health and wellness.
